Implementation and achievements for the period October 2017-September 2018 are reported for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federally promoted, evidence-based community violence-reduction strategy under which each local program is designed to address specific violent-crime issues it is facing.
Abstract
Although tailored to the circumstances of each community, the PSN has five elements common to each local program. These elements are 1) leadership, 2) partnerships, 3) targeted enforcement efforts, 4) prevention of additional violence; and 5) accountability for results based on outcome. Twice a year, each U.S. Attorney's Office reports on its PSN activities and accomplishments for each of the five target areas. At the conclusion of the first year of the reinvigorated PSN program, all 93 U.S. Attorney's Offices have implemented PSN programs. These programs focus on 187 target areas. Approximately 41 percent of districts have more than one target area. In addition to providing overall data and narrative descriptions for each of the five PSN elements throughout the nation, examples are provided of PSN programs across the country that have significantly reduced violent-crime rates. Individual PSN programs profiled are the Northern District of Indiana, the Eastern District of Kentucky, the Southern District of Mississippi, the Eastern District of Michigan, and the Eastern District of Virginia. The U.S. Department of Justice's grant and technical resources dedicated to the PSN are described. 7 figures
