This report outlines AIDS-related Federal congressional actions, provides background information on the nature of AIDS and its transmission, and summarizes Federal and State actions to counter it.
Abstract
The Federal Congress, recognizing the threat AIDS poses to public health and the problems encountered by persons with AIDS, has developed responses to provide support for research, treatment, epidemiological studies, and a national public education effort aimed at risk reduction. This report lists AIDS-related bills introduced in Congress, summarizes their provisions, and names their sponsors. AIDS-related hearing reports by the 99th Congress are also listed, followed by a breakdown of how the $534 million for AIDS research and prevention efforts will be spent under the fiscal year 1988 Federal budget. In reviewing AIDS-related policy of the National Conference of State Legislatures, this report notes that it has no official policy on AIDS but has presented forums on the issue for State legislators at the December 1985 State-Federal Assembly in Washington, D.C., and has conducted a concurrent session at the 1986 annual meeting of the National Conference.
