This guide provides practical information on a spectrum of resources that concerned individuals and organizations can use in the search to create safe schools.
Abstract
To assist schools in their safety efforts, the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL) developed a series of eight guidebooks intended to build a foundation of information that will assist schools and school districts in developing safe learning environments. By drawing on published research and interviews with experts working on school safety issues at the State and local levels, this eighth guide in the series provides information to those wishing to develop safe learning environments through the acquisition and utilization of resources. Major topics discussed in the guide include: (1) what are resources; (2) what role do resources play in safe school planning; (3) identifying and accessing resources; and (4) an appendix of online and print resources. Without adequate resources, school safety planning initiatives are failed initiatives. Resources, to be adequate, must be effectively targeted and deployed through meticulous and methodical--with continuous strategic planning efforts by program developers in conjunction with school and community groups.
