Abstract
This report from the Home Office in Great Britain contains advice for school administrators on addressing the problem of youth violence and gangs in schools and colleges. The main sections of the report cover advice on the support available to address problems of youth violence or gangs; a summary of what works in tackling violence in educational establishments; some considerations when commissioning programs to improve outcomes for young people; and a set of resources and practical checklists for use by school officials. A detailed examination of the legal powers afforded to teachers in relation to discipline in the classroom is provided in the final sections of the report. In order to successfully deal with the problem of youth violence in schools and colleges, administrators need to first understand the scale and nature of youth violence, who is involved, efforts already available to help young people, and where improvements can be made in these efforts.
