This paper offers 10 tips to police chiefs on community policing and providing a safer community to the public they serve.
Abstract
The first tip offered in community policing for police chiefs is on community policing itself and the tools include: community policing for mayors and mayors and chiefs working together for America's children and youth. The second tip is on hiring in the spirit of service and the tools offered: innovations in police recruitment and hiring, a leadership guide for State, local, and Tribal law enforcement on protecting civil rights, enhancing law enforcement ethics in a community policing environment, and guidelines for starting and operating a new police department. The third tip is on methamphetamine and other illegal drugs and the tools offered: tools for combating methamphetamine and the Drugs and Crime CD-ROM. The fourth tip is on gangs and offers the following tools: the COPS Gangs Toolkit and guide on drive-by-shootings. The fifth tip is on partnerships and the tools offered: partnering with businesses to address public safety problems and shifting and sharing responsibility for public safety problems. The sixth tip is on school and campus safety and the tools offered: School Safety CD-ROM and Campus Safety CD-ROM. The seventh tip is on interoperability and the tools offered: Law Enforcement Tech Guide for Communications Interoperability, Interoperable Communications Training and Exercises, Performance Measurement and Interoperability, and Project 25: The Quest for Interoperable Radios. The eighth tip is on technology and the tools offered: Technology Resources for Law Enforcement CD-ROM, Disaster Planning and Recovery: 9-1-1 Center Survivability, Communications in the Incident Command System, and Building a Regional Communications Plan. The ninth tip is on surveillance cameras and the tool offered: video surveillance of public places. The tenth and final tip is on victim support and offers the following tools: the publication, Bringing Victims into Community Policing, guide on domestic violence, and the Teen Action Toolkit: Building a Youth-led Response to Teen Victimization.
