A recent poll reports the opinion of the public and police chiefs about police chiefs wearing uniforms.
Abstract
Ten percent of 91 percent of the police chiefs contacted never wear their uniforms. Some chiefs do not own uniforms and cannot understand the importance of wearing a uniform. Forty percent of the public polled indicated that they like to see police chiefs wear uniforms at least some of the time; 42 percent did not indicate a preference, and 18 percent were unsure. Only 39 percent of the chiefs polled recognized that their department members care whether top administrators wear uniforms. The police chiefs were almost unanimous about wanting to choose when and where they wear uniforms, and most have that choice.
