AUTHORITIES ON LAW ENFORCEMENT, THE COURTS, CORRECTIONS, AND ALLIED SUBJECTS FORECAST DEVELOPMENTS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM FOR 1984 AND BEYOND.
Abstract
THE BOOK IS INTENDED FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARS, PRACTITIONERS, AND STUDENTS, AS WELL AS FOR PRIVATE CITIZENS INTERESTED IN THE FIELD. ITS MAJOR THRUST IS THE NEED TO DEVELOP GREATER UNITY IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM WITH REGARD TO THEORY, PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES, AND BRANCHES AND LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT. SEVENTEEN ARTICLES ARE ORGANIZED INTO SECTIONS REFLECTING BROAD PROBLEM AREAS: (1) PUBLIC LAW ENFORCEMENT (THE ROLES OF LOCAL, COUNTY, AND STATE POLICE AND OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT); (2) PRIVATE POLICE (THE INTERACTION BETWEEN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE POLICE, THE GROWTH OF CAMPUS AND SCHOOL POLICE AGENCIES); (3) INTELLIGENCE-GATHERING PROBLEMS AND SPECIFIC TYPES OF CRIME (ORGANIZED CRIME, TERRORISM, HOSTAGE-TAKING); (4) COURTS AND CORRECTION (CHANGES IN THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM AND IN CORRECTIONS, THE FUTURE OF THE FEMALE OFFENDER); AND (5) CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM PERSONNEL (POLICE LEADERSHIP, LATERAL ENTRY, MINORITY RECRUITMENT AND PROFESSIONALIZATION, THE ROLE OF THE POLICE IN POLLUTION CONTROL). AN INDEX IS PROVIDED. FOR ABSTRACTS OF INDIVIDUAL ARTICLES, SEE NCJ-62850-62864. (LKM)
