THIS SUMMARIZED REPORT ON CRIME IN TEXAS DURING THE YEAR 1979 IS PRESENTED BY THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING (UCR) BUREAU.
Abstract
THE DATA WERE SUBMITTED BY 709 TEXAS SHERIFFS AND CHIEFS OF POLICE WHOSE JURISDICTIONS REPRESENT 99.3 PERCENT OF THE STATE'S POPULATION. THE STATE'S TOTAL, COMPILED FROM COMBINED CAMPUS, URBAN AND RURAL UCR REPORTS SHOWED 790,127 KNOWN OFFENSES REPORTED, AND 169,878 CLEARANCES (21 PERCENT). THERE WERE 2,223 CASES OF CRIMINAL HOMICIDES, WITH 1,630 CLEARED, AND WITH 98 CLEARANCES INVOLVING ONLY THOSE OFFENDERS UNDER 18 YEARS OLD. THERE WERE 25,626 ROBBERIES (WITH THE USE OF A FIREARM, KNIFE OR CUTTING INSTRUMENT, OTHER DANGEROUS WEAPON, AND STRONG-ARM). THE ESTIMATES SHOWED THE RATE PER 100,000 OF THE POPULATION IN THE URBAN AREAS TO BE 6884.9, IN THE RURAL AREAS - 2557.4. THE YEAR 1979 SAW A 6.4 PERCENT INCREASE IN THE TOTAL OF THE OFFENSES WHEN COMPARED WITH 1978. THERE WERE 16.9 PERCENT MORE MURDERS, AND 16.5 PERCENT ROBBERIES. EXTENSIVE STATISTICAL DATA IS PROVIDED.
