This article examines the development of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) Child Abuse Screening Tool - Parent Version (ICAST-P) on child discipline.
Abstract
Patterns of response to the Child Abuse Screening Tool-Parent Version (ICAST-P) revealed few missing values and distributions of responses that generally were similar in the six countries. The behavior it taps is not the entire range of disciplinary behaviors but behaviors thought to be common or important by the contributing experts. This instrument is well positioned as a relatively brief survey of child discipline practices in different communities. It appears to have face validity, reasonable internal consistency, and be acceptable to parents in these countries where it was piloted. There is no data on test, retest reliability from or in comparison with child or youth self-reports with the same children or mental health symptoms from the parents or children. Child maltreatment is a problem that has lengthy recognition worldwide. However, there is a lack of comparability of studies due to the variations in definitions and measures used. The International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) has developed instrumentation that may be used with cross-cultural and cross-national benchmarking by local investigators, ICAST-P. This paper examines the development and pilot results of the instrument developed to be administered to parents for the assessment of child maltreatment. Tables and references
