A CASE STUDY FORMAT IS EMPLOYED TO GIVE STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO APPLY TEXTBOOK THEORIES AND CONCEPTS TO SITUATIONS ENCOUNTERED IN POLICE ADMINISTRATION.
Abstract
THE CASE PROBLEMS ARE TAKEN FROM ACTUAL INCIDENTS. EACH PROBLEM IS OPEN TO A NUMBER OF POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS, ANY ONE OF WHICH MAY BE VALID. THE STUDENT, ACTING AS POLICE ADMINISTRATOR, MUST EXPLORE THE OPTIONS AND SELECT AND JUSTIFY COURSE OF ACTION. TO ASSIST THE STUDENT, A SIX-STEP PROBLEM-SOLVING AND DECISIONMAKING PROCESS IS DESCRIBED. THE CASE PROBLEMS ENCOMPASS THE FOLLOWING AREAS: DEVELOPMENT AND PLANNING, ORGANIZATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE, PERSONNEL ADMINISTRATION; SCHEDULING, ZONING, DISTRIBUTION, AND SELECTIVE ENFORCEMENT; AND ADMINISTRATIVE PROBLEMSOLVING. APPENDED MATERIALS INCLUDE STANDARDS AND GOALS FOR POLICE CHIEF EXECUTIVES (FROM A REPORT BY A COMMITTEE OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CHIEFS OF POLICE), A GLOSSARY, AND A REFERENCE KEY TO FACILITATE USE OF THE CASE PROBLEM MANUAL IN CONJUNCTION WITH BASIC TEXTS IN POLICE ADMINISTRATION.
