THIS 1979 REPORT BY THE ATTORNEY GENERAL COVERS FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE ASSISTANCE ACTIVITIES OF 33 FEDERAL AGENCIES, OFFICES, AND DEPARTMENTS.
Abstract
THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE OF THE U.S. COURTS, ADMINISTERING ALL FEDERAL COURTS BUT THE SUPREME COURT, COLLECTED CRIME STATISTICS AND CONTINUES TO BE INVOLVED WITH THE SPEEDY TRIAL ACT OF 1974. OTHER ACTIVITIES INVOLVED WIRETAPPING AND PROBATION. THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE CONDUCTED FRAUD INVESTIGATION INTO FOOD STAMPS, THE FARMERS HOME ADMINISTRATION, AND FOOD QUALITY. THE CIVIL AERONAUTICS BOARD INVESTIGATED GUIDED TOUR IRREGULARITIES, WHILE AGENCIES WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE WORKED ON A WIDE VARIETY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT ISSUES. THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE SUPPORTED FBI (FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION) EFFORTS AGAINST TERRORISM, PROVIDING VARIOUS TRAINING FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL, AND PROTECTING U.S. GOVERNMENT WITNESSES. THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY INVESTIGATED OIL SHORTAGES AND PRICE ESCALATIONS, WHILE THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY ENFORCED REGULATIONS FOR CLEAN WATER, PESTICIDES, CONSERVATION, AND CHEMICALS. THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION ALSO WAS ENFORCING MANY FEDERAL REGULATIONS, WHILE THE FEDERAL RESERVE BOARD WAS INVOLVED IN THE REGULATION OF BANKING PRACTICES. THE U.S. CUSTOMS SERVICE AND SECRET SERVICE SEIZED MUCH CONTRABAND AND COUNTERFEIT MONEY, RESPECTIVELY, WHILE THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION WAS CONCERNED WITH PROTECTING 172 HOSPITALS AND 244 CLINICS. OTHER AGENCIES DISCUSSED INCLUDE THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE; HEALTH, EDUCATION, AND WELFARE; AND THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION. (PAP)
