A SUMMARY OF THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF POLICE CHIEFS IN 42 CITIES, IN WHICH RESPONDENTS REPORTED ON POLICEWOMEN EFFECTIVENESS, COMMUNITY REACTIONS, MALE OFFICER'S REACTIONS, AND DEPARTMENT POLICIES ON POLICEWOMEN.
Abstract
THE SURVEY SHOWED THAT POLICEWOMEN ARE ON PATROL IN 28 OF THE 42 RESPONDING CITIES. OF THESE 28, 19 FELT THAT WOMEN CAN BE AS EFFECTIVE AS MEN; ONLY TWO BELIEVED THAT WOMEN COULD NOT PERFORM AS EFFECTIVELY. SOME ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF USING WOMEN ON PATROL ARE NOTED. COMMUNITY REACTION WAS FOUND TO BE GENERALLY FAVORABLE. WOMEN WERE FOUND TO REPRESENT A TINY MINORITY OF THE POLICE FORCE; HOWEVER, SOME ACHIEVEMENTS IN GAINING HIGH RANK WERE NOTED IN SPITE OF WOMEN'S NUMERICAL DISADVANTAGE. TRENDS IN EQUIPMENT, MATERNITY LEAVES, AND RECRUITING ARE ALSO DISCUSSED.
