Total expenditure for police protection and corrections by all levels of government was $25 billion, an increase of $2.6 billion over fiscal 1980. Over two-thirds was spent for police protection and close to one-third was spent for corrections. In October 1981, there were 997,193 police protection and corrections employees at all levels of government. This was approximately 12,000 more than in October 1980, and increase of 1.2 percent. State and local full-time police and corrections employees earned an average of $1,590 per month in October of 1981, an increase of 10 percent over 1980. Police protection employees earned more than corrections employees. Extensive tabular data are provided in two sections for fiscal 1980 and 1981. Tables are arranged to show State and local estimates by type of government and individual governmental functional detail for State government, 63 large counties, and 46 large cities. Tables also provide expenditure data for justice system sectors of judicial, legal services and prosecution, public defense, and an 'other' category. A glossary also is provided.
