A large body of research has examined the impact of the police profession movement.
Abstract
The present study evaluated two ideas commonly treated as alternate conceptualizations of the reform movement -professionalization and professionalism. Data were derived from the questionnaire responses of 574 of 771 (74.4 percent) Illinois police chiefs. Police chiefs' responses to three professionalism subscales were utilized to operationalize professionalism. The relationship between professionalization and professionalism was found to resemble a 'loosely coupled system' and role-adjustment characteristics were found to have the greatest influence on chiefs' professionalism.
