A sample of 46 male patients with paraphiliac sexual disorders, all of whom received equivalent amounts of group therapy, was followed for 5 or more years.
Abstract
Thirty-seven percent (17) of the total sample suffered relapses during the followup period, but the rate of relapse among patients receiving treatment with medroxy-progesterone acetate (MPA) was only 4 out of 27 subjects (15 percent). The rate of relapse among subjects not receiving MPA treatment was 68 percent. These findings were consistent even when controlled for other variables including age, race, marital status, employment, socioeconomic status, diagnosis, and sexual orientation. The study had several limitations both patients and therapists knew of the subjects' MPA status during therapy, the subjects in this study were a highly selected group, and undetected relapses probably occurred among the sample. Nonetheless, the researchers concluded that the results support the use of MPA in the treatment of sex offenders. 3 tables, 1 figure, and 23 references
