This CD presents information, data, and materials pertinent to the work of the U.S. Justice Department’s Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) Office.
Abstract
The SMART Office is responsible for administering the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) and grant programs relating to sex offender registration and notification, cooperating with and providing technical assistance to States and other public and private entities regarding sex offender registration and notification, as well as performing other functions for the protection of the public from sexual abuse and exploitation. The CD first presents the proposed Guidelines for Sex Offender Registration and Notification. This is followed by an article that outlines various changes in national standards for the registration of sex offenders instituted by the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 (AWA), which was signed into law by President Bush. One provision of the AWA authorized the creation of the SMART Office. This CD provides an overview of the mission and short history of the SMART Office. Also included in the CD is a Fact Sheet on the Proposed Guidelines for the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), as well as frequently asked questions about SORNA. Other materials presented in the CD address the Juvenile Sex Offender Assessment Protocol-II, training guides on the investigation of alleged child abuse, citizen-police cooperation in the management of sex offenders, how to monitor the sex offender, 2005 recidivism data on sex offenders released from prison in 1994, and a summary of State sex offender registries as of 2001.
