Summaries are presented of the work being done by various federal task forces and commissions to support the goals of Operation Lady Justice (OLJ), which was launched and is administered by the Presidential Task Force on Missing and Murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives.
Abstract
The goal of OLJ is to improve the operation of the criminal justice system and address the concerns of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities regarding missing and murdered people, particularly missing and murdered women and girls. In support of OLJ, the federal Presidential Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice is consulting with tribal law enforcement officials regarding federal actions that can be taken to prevent and respond to cases of missing and murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives. The federal Alyce Spotted Bear and Walter Soboleff Commission on Native Children, which is charged with addressing issues that impact the well-being of Native children, is working with AI/AN communities under OLJ to address cases of missing and murdered AI/AN children. The Federal Enforcement Working Group on Combating Human Trafficking and Child Exploitation in the US supports OLJ efforts by using its resources to address cases of missing and murdered AI/AN persons who are victims of human trafficking. Attorney General Barr's Initiative on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons supports the OLJ mission by providing technical assistance resources and the analysis of federally supported databases to facilitate effective responses to cases of missing and murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives. The federal White House Council on Native American Affairs, which was re-established by President Trump to facilitate interagency cooperation between the federal government and tribal leaders and promote federal policy goals in AI/AN communities, is also using its resources in support of OLJ.
