The Police Management Study contains statewide management data pertaining to South Dakota Police Departments.
Abstract
This study provides a valid means of comparing expenditures, resources, policies and practices of departments across the State of South Dakota. This survey collects information on issues, such as budgets, per capita cost of law enforcement, personnel benefits, salaries, specialized equipment, weapons, turnover, and training. The survey instrument used in this study is a self-report completed by the Chief of Police or department staff. Currently, there are 74 police departments in South Dakota, not including tribal agencies. Fifty-four departments returned surveys yielding a total response rate of 73 percent. Of the 54 respondents, three of them (6 percent) designated themselves as part-time departments. Data for these part-time departments are reported separately for comparison purposes only. The results of this survey should provide police chiefs with a valid means of comparing expenditures and resources of departments across the State while providing Chiefs with a substantial basis from which to justify future managerial decisions. Many law enforcement administrators have also found this study invaluable in preparing budgets and applying for grants. Tables and figures
