A SET OF FOUR CASSETTE TAPES. THIS POLICE TRAINING COURSE EXPLORES THE PROBLEMS OF SUPERVISION IN A LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY, FOCUSING ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FIRST LINE SUPERVISORS AND LINE PERSONNEL.
Abstract
NARRATED BY THREE SPEAKERS, THE COURSE PRESENTS BOTH TECHNIQUES WHICH WILL AID THE NEWLY APPOINTED SUPERVISOR AND SUGGESTIONS WHICH WILL BE OF VALUE TO THE MOST EXPERIENCED SERGEANT. SEVERAL SPECIFIC LEADERSHIP TECHNIQUES FOR INSPIRING RESPECT, CONFIDENCE, AND LOYALTY ON THE PART OF SUBORDINATES ARE DESCRIBED. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY A DISCUSSION ON HOW TO MOTIVATE BETTER BEHAVIOR FROM LINE PERSONNEL AND THE SUPERVISOR'S ROLE IN MAINTAINING AND IMPROVING MORALE. OTHER MAJOR TOPICS CONSIDERED IN DETAIL ARE GIVING ORDERS, CONDUCTING INSPECTIONS, PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS, PUNITIVE DISCIPLINE, COUNSELING, AND RELATIONS WITH SPECIAL EMPLOYEE TYPES (INCLUDING RACIAL AND RELIGIOUS MINORITIES). SPECIAL AREAS, SUCH AS THE SUPERVISOR'S RESPONSIBILITY IN TRAINING AND RECRUITING, AND THE SPECIALIZED TECHNIQUES USED IN PERFORMING THESE FUNCTIONS (CONFERENCE LEADING AND BRIEFING, FOR EXAMPLE) ARE ALSO EXPLORED. THROUGHOUT THE ALMOST FOUR HOURS OF THE COURSE, SPECIFIC, PLAUSIBLE EXAMPLES ARE USED TO EXPLAIN THE OUTLINED TECHNIQUES. EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON SUBSTITUTING BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION PRINCIPLES FOR PUNITIVE DISCIPLINE WHENEVER POSSIBLE....ELW
