This resource guide aims to create greater awareness among law enforcement, courts, prosecutors, defenders, State and local legislators, advocates, social service providers, and the homeless regarding the U.S. Justice Department's (DOJ's) resources available to homeless people.
Abstract
Seven annotated listings of relevant DOJ publications focus on such topics as effective alternatives to incarceration, police policies toward homeless encampments, prisoner reentry and community policing, the promotion of partnerships between police and community supervision agencies, and case studies in problem solving for countering crime and other public-safety problems. This is followed by summaries of research related to the homeless population, including its prevalence, characteristics, and how the criminal justice system should respond to this problem. The third category of DOJ resources focuses on grant programs and technical assistance. Information for each grant program includes the program's name, fiscal year 2012 funding, DOJ sponsoring agency, Web link, program contact, and program description. The grants are categorized under the following topics: general, judicial system, justice and mental health, Second Chance Act, victims of crime, tribal justice systems, State and local governments, grant management resources, and other resources.
