This paper summarizes the results of a 1984 study of the career paths of 117 police chiefs serving American municipalities of over 100,000 population.
Abstract
The study found that these police executives had utilized five distinct career patterns or typologies as they progressed through the police hierarchy. The role of higher education was found to differ among these five typologies in that those police chiefs who used less traditional career routes had higher levels of education. The prevalence of criminal justice degree programs among the fields of study of the respondents is also discussed. (Publisher abstract)
