This document presents the proceedings of the first meeting of the White House Task Force on Drug Use in Sports, convened in Salt Lake City, UT, in December 2000.
Abstract
Following the foreword and a letter from President Bill Clinton, the Executive Order establishing the White House Task Force on Drug Use in Sports is presented. The Task Force is charged with developing recommendations for the United States Government programs to reduce drug use in sports at all levels. The keynote address was delivered by Director Barry R. McCaffrey, Office of National Drug Control Policy and Task Force Co-Chair; the topic was on strengthening efforts in the United States to stop drug use in sports. Several sessions were convened that dealt with youth and sports, the athletes perspective, science and research, and the Salt Lake City anti-doping program. The President of the United States Olympic Committee, Scott Blackmun, offered remarks on the United States Olympic Commitment to drug free sports. The document includes a verbatim transcript of the meeting proceedings, as well as material submitted for the record and selected media coverage. Those participating in the Task Force meeting included athletes, professionals from the scientific community, and government officials who came together to discuss actions that should be taken to address drug use in sports, from elite levels to youth sports. The three main issues focused on by the Task Force were (1) ensuring a drug-free 2002 Olympic winter games; (2) preventing drug use in young athletes; and (3) effective ways for the Federal Government to intervene in drug use in sports at all levels. The next Task Force meeting is expected to convene in March 2001.
