Abstract
THE BOOK IS DESIGNED FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATORS AND OFFICERS AS WELL AS FOR CONCERNED CITIZENS WHO WISH TO SEE POLICE AGENCIES OPERATING MORE EFFECTIVELY AND EFFICIENTLY. INFORMATION WAS OBTAINED FROM BOOKS, ARTICLES, PRIVATE OR GOVERNMENTAL REPORTS, AND RESEARCH STUDIES ABOUT FEMALE OFFICERS. NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDENCE AND TELEPHONE INTERVIEWS WITH NUMEROUS FOREIGN AND AMERICAN POLICE AGENCIES ALSO CONTRIBUTED TO THE COMPILATION, AS DID INTERVIEWS WITH MALE AND FEMALE OFFICERS OF ALL RANKS. PRESENTATIONS TRACE THE HISTORICAL AND PRESENT ROLES OF POLICEWOMEN IN COUNTRIES AS DIVERSE AS JAPAN, POLAND, GUYANA, AND ISRAEL, AND DISCUSS THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN POLICEWOMEN FROM THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY USE OF PRISON MATRONS TO THE POST-1972 HIRING OF WOMEN IN THE FBI, STATE LAW ENFORCEMENT, PRIVATE SECURITY, AND LOCAL POLICE FORCES. OBSTACLES CONFRONTING WOMEN IN LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE IDENTIFIED, WITH ATTENTION TO THE SELECTION PROCESS, ATTITUDES, AND THE MASS MEDIA. THE EFFECTS OF POLICEWOMEN BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE GENERAL PATROL, AND IN THE SUPERVISORY ROLE ARE CONSIDERED. FURTHER SUBJECTS COVERED INCLUDE STRESS, THE WOMEN'S LIBERATION MOVEMENT, ABSENTEEISM AND TURNOVER, SEX AND ROMANCE, AND CIVIL SERVICE. FINALLY, COMPONENTS INVOLVED IN THE POLICE CHIEF'S ROLE ARE OUTLINED, AND A SUMMARY POINTS TO OPTIMAL METHODS FOR ACHIEVING MORE EMPLOYMENT OF POLICEWOMEN. APPENDIXES INCLUDE A POLICE CHIEF'S DIRECTIVE ON THE UTILIZATION OF POLICEWOMEN IN PATROL, RESULTS OF PHYSICAL AGILITY TESTS, A SPOUSES TRAINING PROGRAM FORMAT, AND AN IMPLEMENTATION CHECKLIST FOR POLICEWOMEN-ON-PATROL PROGRAMS. REFERENCES AND A BIBLIOGRAPHY ARE ATTACHED. (AOP)
